Photo Help

A favorite photograph, close to your heart

Choosing the photograph is part of the pleasure of owning a locket. A loved one, a beloved pet, a family portrait, or a face from long ago: start with the picture that means something to you.

Choose a photograph that will work at a small size

Look for a clear face with a little space around it. A tightly cropped portrait may lose important details when trimmed into a heart or oval. Print a few sizes on ordinary paper first, so you can try the fit without cutting your original photograph.

Measure the space inside, not the outside of the locket

The width in a product description is the locket’s exterior measurement, not the photograph size. Check the shape and dimensions of the actual photo recess before preparing your final print. A paper template can help you test both the outline and the position of the face.

Check your locket’s photo compatibility

Fitted photo insert: Some lockets have removable protective inserts or retainers. Construction varies by style; follow the instructions for your particular locket, and do not pry out a part that resists.

Shallow photo recess: These styles need a very thin paper photograph and separate mounting. Thick photo paper may prevent the locket from closing properly.

Miniature keepsake: Very small lockets have limited photo space and delicate construction. Check the individual listing before choosing one primarily to hold a photograph.

Fit gently, and keep the original safe

Use a copy of your photograph. Test the fit before mounting it, keep adhesive away from hinges and closures, and never force a retainer or the locket shut. If something will not sit comfortably, stop and ask for help. Antique lockets may need individual advice.
